WHY SHOULD YOUNG PLANNERS ATTEND #PIACONGRESS18
This year’s PIA National Congress will focus on ‘frontiers of planning’. This year we will be showcasing an excellent array of high calibre speakers, who will be sharing their expertise knowledge on a variety of frontier planning concepts.

The program will feature a number of Young Planner’s who will present on topics such as; Planning for ‘Drone Disruption’; How can urban design create a viable and liveable off-world city? A city on Mars; Planning First: Land Use is Shaping Adelaide’s Future Light Rail Network; Gender and the City: Places for Everyone; and the use of driverless vehicles in our future cities. There will also be a Young Planner led panel discussion exploring the use of renewable energy, in particular battery energy, to power residential developments in the future, and how changes to our current energy distribution model can challenge traditional energy consumption in Australia.
The congress will also feature keynote speakers; Dr. Leyla Acaroglu, Julian Coyne, and Michael Wexler and James Thoem.
Sustainability provocateur and cultural protagonist Dr. Leyla Acaroglu challenges people to think differently about how the world works. Leyla developed the Disruptive Design Method and designs cerebrally activating experiences, gamified toolkits, and unique educational experience that help people make the status quo obsolete. Her keynote presentation at congress will explore ‘Design disruptor, creative boundary pusher, and cultural provocateur’.
Julian Coyne is the Managing Director of Unified (technology advisory and strategy) and serves as the Chair WA Council of AIIA (Australian Information Industry Association). Julian’s keynote presentation will go ‘Back to the Future – Towards Smarter Cities, Industries and Precincts’, as he explores how technology can be applied to solve real world challenges.
Michael Wexler and James Thoem from Copenhagenize Design Co. will not only be a keynote presenter at Congress but will also be running a Bicycle Urbanism Masterclass the day prior. Copenhagenize Design Co. specialises in bicycle planning and works on planning cities, districts and neighbourhoods, by integrating simplicity, logic and human nature into mobility networks.
