With the era of autonomous technology underway, it is inevitable that driverless vehicles will one day be operating on our streets. Research literature suggests the global acceptance of fully autonomous vehicles is increasingly near, and this allows us to imagine its potential application in Australia. Through a research programme comprising a literature review, case study analysis and combined meta-analysis, I have sought to identify the factors that will support, or inhibit, the implementation of autonomous vehicles in urban environments. Case studies in Heathrow (London Airport), La Rochelle (France), and Austin (Texas), suggest that modifying existing infrastructure to interact with modern automobile technology will be necessary to overcome several operational issues and social perceptions towards safety.
